A WORD FROM THE FOUNDER
About Shutter America
Welcome to Shutter America – a site devoted to introducing you to the finest handcrafted exterior wood shutters in America.
My name is Buck Massey and I’m the founder and co-owner of Shutter America. The other co-owner is my son, Samuel Massey.
Although Samuel practically grew up in our shop as a young boy, he officially joined the company in 2009 as our vice president of operations.
He’s been a great asset to Shutter America. His relentless desire to improve all aspects of our business and his remarkable ability to design, upgrade and customize much of the equipment we use today has helped us take our company – and our wood shutters – to a whole new level.
A Family-Run Business
As co-owners, we pride ourselves on being a family-owned and operated business. Why is that important to you?
It means we take great pride in nurturing strong, personal relationships with our customers. When you become a customer, you also become part of our extended family. You are always treated like family.
As a Shutter America customer, we will do whatever it takes to satisfy you 110%. We don’t just sell you shutters and then say ‘good-bye.’ We support you and honor your needs all the time.
Our superior customer service is one of many reasons we get the referrals
. . . and many repeat customers that we do.
From Fine Furniture to Fine Wood Shutters
Before starting our company, I handcrafted some of the finest heirloom furniture. I made them the old, traditional way with meticulous attention to detail and using historically proven construction methods, such as mortise & tenon, dovetail joinery, and hand-fashioned turnings.
The furniture I made was built to last for generations. People who saw my finished pieces likened my work to those of old-world furniture makers.
I tell you this because I bring this same level of workmanship and quality to the exterior wood shutters I handcraft and sell today.
Our company was founded in 1992. This came about shortly after a home builder asked me to build some traditional historical shutters for an old historical building he was working on. He knew I was a furniture maker.
Because I loved building things with wood – and believed I could apply the same craftsmanship used in making fine furniture to making wood shutters – I accepted the task. And that’s how I was attracted to this business.
From Texas Exterior Shutters to Shutter America
When our company opened in 1992, we called it Texas Exterior Shutters. More recently, we changed our company name to Shutter America since many of our shutters were being shipped to other parts of the country.
Early on . . . as part of our due diligence for starting this business . . . we found homes with wood shutters that were built in the 1800s and early 1900s. We carefully removed some of the shutters and painstakingly took them apart to see how they were built.
One thing that amazed me was how well they had held up. They were the original shutters – in some cases, about 200 years old or so – yet they were still in very good condition.
In our research, we discovered that the wood used in those old shutters was cedar and cypress. Among their characteristics was the ability to discourage water and insect penetration. This made them rot and insect resistant.
This is why we use only the finest Spanish Cedar and Western Red Cedar. We’re very picky about the grade of wood we obtain. Every piece is hand selected. If it doesn’t meet our exacting standards of quality, we don’t buy it.
We make every shutter by hand at our Texas mill. They are built to last for generations.
Don’t settle for imitations. When you want the best, buy the best! Shutter America.
